One of the types of social disorder that has gotten a lot of publicity in the last couple of decades is the eating disorder. This type of condition involves an intense preoccupation with food intake and body weight or shape, in which the sufferer adjusts their eating habits in a way that ultimately is detrimental to their health. These types of disorders may also be accompanied by a mental disorder, such as clinical depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Whether any of these “cause” each other, though, has yet to be established.
The causes of the type of social disorder that focuses on food and eating are still not really known. However, there is evidence to suggest both a strong physical factor, as well as a socio-psychological factor. For example, there are associations between brain lesions and tumors and disorders related to eating. Certain hormone imbalances are also strongly associated. At the same time, social factors like child abuse, social isolation, or parental or peer influence have also been shown to relate to these eating problems in a marked way.
If one is looking for a pill to take for this particular social disorder, then they’re unfortunately out of luck. Developing drugs for a mental health problem with so many possible causes is extremely difficult. What does appear to result in some success, however, is various types of behavioral and family therapy. These therapies usually involve assessing the dynamics within a family as well as the individual’s own thought patterns, and trying to bring about changes that will support more positive eating habits and attitudes.
